The Milwaukee Bucks are approaching a critical crossroads with franchise cornerstone Giannis Antetokounmpo.
With Damian Lillard expected to miss most or all of the 2025–26 season due to an Achilles tear, the Bucks may face a challenging campaign ahead – one that could test the patience and long-term vision of their superstar forward.
Antetokounmpo, who has long prioritized loyalty and competitive ambition, now finds himself at the center of widespread speculation – even if none of it is coming directly from him or his team.
As of now, neither Giannis nor his representatives have indicated any desire to leave Milwaukee, instead maintaining an intense focus on the team.
“There has been zero speculation about Giannis and his future,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported on NBA Today.
“He’s worked very hard and so has his representation to shut down anything. He has been completely focused on the Bucks. So therefore this is basically a bit of a mystery. It might be a mystery within the organization a little bit. It’s definitely a mystery for other teams out there.”
Windhorst added that the uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s plans has created ripple effects across the league. As teams weigh their offseason moves, many are waiting to see how Giannis’ situation unfolds before committing to major trades or roster decisions.
“This is going to be one of the biggest things hanging over the NBA offseason,” Windhorst continued.
“And other players, potentially even star players who might end up on the trade market might have to wait themselves to see how Giannis’ situation plays out because teams are going to see him as the biggest fish.”
Giannis is expected to meet with Bucks leadership in the coming weeks, as is customary following each season.
These discussions will likely touch on the team’s direction, roster strategy, and whether the current core, now down a co-star for an extended period, can still contend at a championship level.
The two-time MVP signed a three-year, $186 million extension in October 2023 shortly after Milwaukee acquired Lillard, signaling his commitment.
He also has a player option for the 2027 offseason, giving him potential leverage. Notably, Antetokounmpo made a similar commitment in 2020 after the team traded for Jrue Holiday – a move that ultimately helped deliver a title in 2021.
But as the Bucks now face a future without Lillard for the foreseeable future, the question becomes: will history repeat itself, or will Giannis reevaluate his path?
