Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers provided a poignant glimpse into the mindset of star guard Damian Lillard following the devastating Achilles injury he sustained during Game 4 of the series.
As Lillard begins to come to terms with the reality of his injury – a torn left Achilles tendon that could sideline him for the entire 2025–26 season – Rivers recounted an emotional conversation that revealed the guard’s determination and resilience.
“He said two things, which I love,” the coach shared. “The first one, he just said, ‘I can’t believe I’m here.’ Then the second one is, ‘I’m not going out this way.’ I can guarantee you he won’t, and that’s what I meant about his resolve.”
According to Rivers, the nine-time All-Star remains focused on returning to the court, using this setback as motivation rather than defeat.
Though the typical recovery from an Achilles tear can take 10 to 12 months, often extending to a full year for NBA players to return to form, Lillard’s mindset suggests he’s already preparing mentally for the long road ahead.
