Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry played a crucial role in his team’s 104-93 win over the Houston Rockets in Game 3 of their first-round playoff series. With 36 points, nine assists, and seven rebounds, Curry powered the Warriors to a 2-1 series lead, despite the absence of Jimmy Butler, who is sidelined with a pelvic injury.
Curry’s performance was instrumental in securing the win, especially after a slow start to the game. “We gave ourselves a chance by weathering the storm in the first quarter,” Curry said. “Then we closed out the second quarter with that run that kept it close.” Despite struggling with his shooting early, Curry found his rhythm, hitting crucial shots, including a pivotal three-pointer that sparked a 13-point surge in the second quarter.
The Warriors also received a boost from Buddy Hield, who stepped up off the bench with 17 points, including five made three-pointers. Curry highlighted Hield’s importance, noting, “That’s what he’s done his whole career. For him to have a game like he did, it’s big time.”
Defensively, the Warriors executed their game plan to perfection. Curry praised his team’s defensive effort, pointing to Gary Payton II’s stellar fourth-quarter performance. “GP was unbelievable in the fourth quarter,” Curry said, emphasizing the collective effort to close out the game strong.
Curry also reflected on the mental and physical challenges of the series. “It’s physically taxing because you’re handling the pressure on the ball,” Curry explained. “You have to be locked in—mentally, physically, emotionally—and be patient.” Curry noted the importance of staying focused throughout the game, especially when the Rockets were doubling him or running traps.
Curry acknowledged the absence of Butler, stating that it presented both a challenge and an opportunity for the Warriors. “We had one task,” Curry said. “We can win a tough, physical playoff game.” He also touched on the mental shift required when an opposing star player is out, but emphasized that the Warriors’ mindset was to focus on the game at hand. “Next man up mentality, it’s got to be a belief and a confidence,” he added.
As for his own aggressive approach to the game, Curry made it clear that he was willing to do whatever it took to win. “I was just trying to win, like whatever it takes,” Curry said. His leadership and assertiveness were on full display throughout the game, with Curry setting the tone for his teammates.
Looking ahead, Curry remains focused on the task at hand: advancing in the playoffs. “We need Jimmy to do that,” Curry said, referring to the team’s championship aspirations. “But if there’s a situation where somebody’s not available, next man up mentality, it’s got to be a belief and a confidence.”
The Warriors now lead the series 2-1, with Game 4 set to take place on Monday at Chase Center.
