The Memphis Grizzlies’ 121-116 loss to the Golden State Warriors in the Play-In Tournament on Tuesday night was a tough blow, as the Grizzlies fought hard but ultimately came up short.
Despite 30 points from Desmond Bane and 22 from Ja Morant, Memphis couldn’t capitalize on a late-game push. Grizzlies interim head coach Tuomas Iisalo shared his thoughts on the game and what’s next for his team.
“We gave them the lead, and we felt like we gave them the lead. Then we worked ourselves back into the game,” Iisalo said, reflecting on his team’s struggles to close the contest. “Unfortunately, it’s been the story—we play a hell of a game, and then we’re unable to close it.”
The Grizzlies had been battling back after the Warriors built a significant lead, but late-game execution once again became an issue. The loss stings even more given Memphis’ previous strong efforts. Iisalo acknowledged the emotional toll this one would take on his players.
“Of course, it’s hard. Otherwise, everyone would be doing it. But it’s our job,” Iisalo added. “There’s nothing we can do to change this result anymore. All we can do is learn from it and apply it to the next game.”
A critical moment came when Morant injured his ankle in the second half. Despite being in pain, Morant continued to play, drawing praise from Iisalo. “Seeing him in that situation—it was inspiring,” Iisalo said. “It lifted the guys up to see that your leader is putting it all on the line.”
Morant’s injury was not the only challenge Memphis faced. The Warriors were led by Jimmy Butler, who scored 38 points and Stephen Curry, who added 37. Butler’s strong play, including 18 free throw attempts, helped swing momentum in the Warriors’ favor. Curry’s late three-pointers sealed the victory, showing why the duo’s performance was key.
Iisalo also praised the play of rookie Zach Edey, noting his impact on both sides of the ball. “He solidifies the defensive rebound… his impact is not always the most obvious,” Iisalo said, adding that Edey’s rebounding was crucial in giving Memphis extra shot opportunities.
Despite the loss, Memphis has a chance to bounce back. They will play the winner of the Mavericks-Kings game on Friday for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
