The Phoenix Suns are expected to undergo sweeping changes this offseason after a failed 2024-25 campaign that ended without a postseason berth.
Following the dismissal of head coach Mike Budenholzer after just one year, NBA insider Shams Charania reported on NBA Today that the franchise has decided to rebuild around Devin Booker.
Charania said Booker “remains a foundation of everything they’re doing in Phoenix,” while the rest of the roster is now on the table for potential moves.
The Suns finished the regular season at 36–46, placing 11th in the Western Conference and ranking as the league’s third-worst defensive team.
The poor performance prompted owner Mat Ishbia to cut ties with Budenholzer, making it the fourth straight year Phoenix will start a season with a new head coach.
The Suns had entered the season with the NBA’s highest payroll, and were coming off a 49-win campaign in 2023-24 that saw them finish sixth in the West.
According to Charania, Phoenix plans to work with Kevin Durant and his business partner Rich Kleiman on finding a new team via trade during the summer.
The Suns will likely monitor the playoff landscape to identify a contender that views Durant as a final piece toward a title run.
Durant, 36, averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists this season but struggled defensively along with the rest of the roster.
Phoenix had previously explored a deal for Miami Heat forward Jimmy Butler but were reportedly unable to include Bradley Beal due to his no-trade clause and declining value.
Booker, 28, posted averages of 25.6 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds across 75 games and remains under contract through 2028.
The upcoming offseason is expected to be pivotal for the Suns as they look to reshape the roster and establish stability on the sidelines.
No head coaching candidate has been formally announced, but the organization is expected to prioritize leadership that can maximize Booker’s prime years.
With Durant likely on the move and Beal’s future uncertain, Phoenix appears headed for its most significant roster overhaul since the team’s 2021 Finals run.
