The Milwaukee Bucks secured a 136-111 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Thursday, extending their win streak to six games. Head coach Doc Rivers spoke to the media afterward, sharing his thoughts on the game, his team’s recent play, and the critical stretch ahead with games against the Detroit Pistons.
The Bucks, now 46-34, are locked in the battle for playoff positioning as the regular season nears its end. Rivers reflected on his team’s mindset, acknowledging the significance of the game against Detroit. “We knew that if Detroit won, it didn’t matter what we did in the game. The game was under control, and we got a flight. So, we wanted to get the guys, you know, get in the shower, get their treatment, and when you go in the back, you’ll have nobody to talk to. Just telling you that right now,” Rivers explained.
After a tight first quarter, the Bucks pulled away in the second and third. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the charge with 28 points and 11 rebounds, keeping Milwaukee ahead. Rivers praised the Pelicans’ effort, noting their depleted roster but highlighting their grit. “They’re playing at such a deficit with all their guys out, but the guys they have playing are playing hard,” Rivers said. “The talent in the NBA is just amazing.”
One standout for the Bucks was Kevin Porter Jr., who added 20 points and seven assists in just 23 minutes. Rivers discussed the growth of the young guard, stating, “He’s been great, going downhill, attacking, making plays, and shooting the ball well. He didn’t shoot great tonight, but overall, he’s been really shooting the ball well.”
The Bucks’ depth was on full display, with strong performances from players like Gary Trent Jr. and Bobby Portis. Trent, who scored 17 points off the bench, hit 4-of-7 three-pointers, contributing to the team’s 54.4% shooting from the field. Portis, in his return to the lineup, finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Rivers also credited Trent and Porter for their defensive contributions, which have been instrumental during this winning streak.
With two crucial games against the Detroit Pistons ahead, Rivers is focused on keeping his team healthy and prepared for the playoffs. “Getting Bobby (Portis) back was big. I want Bobby to play a little more minutes, so that’s why we kept him in,” Rivers said, referring to his strategy in keeping Portis engaged. He also spoke about the playoff atmosphere in Detroit, emphasizing how important it is for the Bucks to match their intensity.
Milwaukee’s 136-111 victory over New Orleans was critical for securing a favorable playoff position. With the Pacers’ win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Bucks are now fighting to finish in the fifth seed. Rivers expressed excitement about the challenge ahead, saying, “I think the crowd in Detroit is going to be amazing. They’re going to play hard, they’re going to play well, and we’re going to have to match it.”
As the Bucks look to continue their hot streak, the team is preparing for the upcoming games that could solidify their playoff berth. Rivers is confident that his squad will be ready. “I can’t pick a better scenario going into the playoffs than this, you know?” he said.
