Luka Doncic led the Los Angeles Lakers to a dominant 126-99 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder, sending a powerful message to the NBA. The win came at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, a venue known for its tough home court advantage.
With the victory, the Lakers (48-30) kept their grip on third place in the Western Conference, while the Thunder, despite the loss, remained atop the standings with a 64-14 record.
Doncic, who scored 30 points, was a key factor in the Lakers’ explosive performance. He shot 11-for-20 from the field, including 5-of-11 from three-point range. His efficient play in the first half helped bury Oklahoma City early, giving the Lakers a commanding lead by halftime.
When asked about his performance and the team’s approach to the game, Doncic highlighted the Thunder’s strengths. “I think we shared the ball great, and that’s how we got great looks,” he said. “Shai [Gilgeous-Alexander] is an unbelievable player. He makes them look like an incredible team, and they are. Their defense is tough too—they can switch, control the game, and have a lot of weapons.”
The Lakers were especially potent in the first half, setting a franchise record with 15 three-pointers. The visitors were not only shooting lights out but also dictating the flow of the game. “The ball was moving, and we got a lot of open shots—that’s what we needed to do moving forward,” Doncic explained.
Austin Reaves added 20 points, and LeBron James contributed 19 points with seven assists, providing ample support for Doncic. Together, they helped the Lakers outscore the Thunder 36-24 in the second quarter, building a 78-56 halftime lead.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick, in his postgame comments, mentioned how the team’s aggressive mindset was crucial. “We needed to be physical and we needed to go out aggressive,” Redick said. Doncic echoed this sentiment, noting that the team’s performance has been improving as they continue to mesh. “It’s amazing,” he said. “We’ve been getting better and better. Our defense has been solid, and we’ve been playing aggressively.”
The Thunder, despite the loss, were led by their star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who finished with 26 points. However, the Lakers’ offensive efficiency was too much to overcome. Oklahoma City struggled defensively against the Lakers’ sharp shooting, finishing the game with just 43.3 percent shooting overall.
Doncic also touched on the challenge presented by Oklahoma City’s defense, particularly Luguentz Dort, one of the league’s top defenders. “Going against Lu Dort is a tough job,” Doncic said. “He’s one of the best defenders in the NBA. It brings that competitive spirit out of me, and it brings the best out of me.”
The Lakers’ win was fueled by their ability to adjust and exploit Oklahoma City’s defensive schemes. “We’re at our best when they blitz,” Doncic said. “It’s easy basketball for three. Obviously, it’s not always easy, but we’ve worked on that. The ball was moving, and we got a lot of open looks.”
A memorable highlight came in the second quarter, when Doncic made a no-look, behind-the-head assist to Gabe Vincent for a corner three. Doncic joked about the unorthodox pass, saying, “I don’t think you can practice that pass. Sometimes I decide stuff that I don’t know how I make it. I was just glad he made it—tough shot.”
Dorian Finney-Smith also had a standout performance off the bench, scoring 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range, while contributing to the Lakers’ game-high plus-28 in just 29 minutes of play.
