Isaiah Stewart, the Detroit Pistons’ physical and defensive-minded big man, is set to return from a two-game league suspension as his team takes on the Memphis Grizzlies tonight.
Detroit’s rim protector was handed the suspension for his role in an altercation with the Minnesota Timberwolves during Sunday’s game.
However, the suspension hasn’t deterred Stewart’s focus on returning to his defensive role, which has become a key element of the Pistons’ identity.
As the team works to establish themselves as a tough, defensive squad, the Pistons’ defensive anchor’s presence is a crucial part of that effort.
Speaking with Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press, Stewart shared his confidence in his defensive abilities and explained the impact he aims to have when he steps back onto the floor.
“I would say I’m the most versatile defender,” the center asserted, outlining his belief that he brings a unique and diverse skill set to the defensive end of the floor.
“I’m the best rim protector. I can guard out on the perimeter. I feel like there’s a lot of things that I do on the defensive end that nobody else does, in my opinion.”
Stewart continued by highlighting his leadership role on the court, emphasizing his defensive communication and his ability to direct his teammates.
“From communicating, being the commander, getting my guys in their spots, always having my guys back,” he said. “There’s always a shift when I enter the game on defense.”
He further explained that his presence on the court tends to have an immediate effect on the flow of the game, whether the Pistons are building a lead or trying to claw their way back into the contest.
“Rather that time, their offense slows down while we’re building the lead or their offense slows down while we’re getting back into the game. I always make a shift.”
For the Pistons, Stewart’s return represents not just the return of a player but the reemergence of a defensive catalyst capable of changing the momentum and setting the tone for his team.
