The Philadelphia 76ers have announced that star guard Tyrese Maxey will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a finger tendon injury.

The 24-year-old has not played since March 3rd as he focused on rehabbing the injury, but after further evaluation, the team has decided to shut him down for the rest of the campaign.

Maxey was enjoying a breakout season before the injury, posting impressive averages of 26.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.

His stellar play earned him a lucrative five-year, $204 million contract extension with the Sixers last off-season after he was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player.

His absence is yet another major blow to a Philadelphia team that has already lost key players for the season.

The Sixers previously ruled out superstar center Joel Embiid and veteran forward Paul George, leaving the team severely shorthanded as they close out the year.

Philadelphia’s struggles this season carry additional implications, as they owe a top-six protected first-round pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

With Maxey, Embiid, and George all unavailable, the Sixers’ draft positioning and future roster decisions will be key storylines heading into the offseason.
