The Memphis Grizzlies have appointed assistant coach Tuomas Iisalo as the team’s interim head coach following the sudden dismissal of Taylor Jenkins, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.
Iisalo, a former Finnish professional player and coach, takes over as Memphis fights to maintain its position in the Western Conference playoff race. Before joining the Grizzlies, he led Paris Basketball to the 2024 EuroCup title and was named EuroCup Coach of the Year.
The move comes after Memphis parted ways with Jenkins despite holding the fifth seed in the West with a 44-29 record. General manager Zach Kleiman acknowledged Jenkins’ contributions but did not provide specific reasons for the decision.
“I’m genuinely appreciative of Taylor’s contributions to this team and this city over the past six seasons,” Kleiman said in a statement. “This was a difficult decision given the consistent and tangible development of our players and overall success under Taylor’s leadership.”
Jenkins departs as the winningest coach in franchise history, compiling a 250-214 record since taking over in 2019. He played a key role in developing Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. while guiding Memphis to multiple playoff appearances.
Under his leadership, the Grizzlies became a contender in the West, peaking in 2022 with a 56-26 record that earned Jenkins NBA Coach of the Year honors. His coaching style emphasized defensive intensity, player development, and an up-tempo offensive system.
Memphis has struggled with defensive consistency this season and has gone 5-5 over its last 10 games. Injuries to key players have also hampered the team, creating challenges as the postseason approaches.
Iisalo now steps into a high-pressure situation with only a few weeks left in the regular season. His ability to quickly adjust and maintain stability will be critical as Memphis looks to secure its playoff positioning.
The 42-year-old Finnish coach brings international experience and a reputation for tactical innovation. His success with Paris Basketball showcased his ability to maximize talent, and Memphis hopes he can provide a spark in the final stretch of the season.
Jenkins’ firing adds another layer of uncertainty to the Grizzlies’ future. With the Western Conference packed with playoff contenders, the coaching transition will be closely watched.
Memphis’ long-term coaching plans remain unclear, as the franchise has yet to indicate whether Iisalo will be considered for the full-time role beyond this season. His performance in the coming weeks could determine his future with the team.
Meanwhile, Jenkins immediately becomes one of the most sought-after coaching candidates on the market. His track record of player development and sustained success will likely attract interest from multiple teams in the offseason.
As the Grizzlies adjust to this unexpected coaching change, their response in the final weeks of the regular season will be critical. More details on the franchise’s next steps and Jenkins’ future are expected to emerge soon.
