ALBA Berlin has officially parted ways with head coach Israel Gonzalez, appointing assistant Pedro Calles as his replacement.
The coaching change comes amid a difficult EuroLeague season for ALBA, which sits at the bottom of the standings with a 4-24 record.
Gonzalez, who took over as head coach in 2021, departs after four seasons in charge, during which he compiled a 33-96 EuroLeague record.
He had previously served as an assistant under AĂto GarcĂa Reneses before being promoted to the top job.
Despite domestic success, ALBA has struggled on the international stage, leading to the club’s decision to make a midseason coaching change.
Calles, who joined ALBA’s coaching staff in January 2025, will now step into his first EuroLeague head coaching role.
His previous experience at the European level came in the 2021-22 season when he led Veolia Towers Hamburg to a 7-11 record in the EuroCup.
Before joining ALBA, Calles spent time as a head coach with three German clubs: Rasta Vechta (2018-20), Hamburg (2020-22), and Oldenburg (2022-24).
His first test as ALBA’s new leader will come on Thursday when the team faces Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz at Uber Arena.
