The latest chapter of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry delivered on the court and in the ratings, drawing record-breaking viewership for ABC’s NBA Saturday Primetime.
According to the NBA, the highly anticipated matchup averaged 4.61 million viewers, making it the most-watched regular season game in seven years outside of Christmas Day. Viewership peaked at 5.3 million, and the game ranked as the most-watched primetime program across all networks on Saturday night.
The showdown featured an elite performance from Jayson Tatum, who led the Celtics to a 111-101 victory over the Lakers with 40 points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists. Jaylen Brown added 31 points as Boston extended its winning streak to four games.
Despite falling behind by 20 points in the fourth quarter, Los Angeles made a late push before Tatum and Brown sealed the game with the Celtics’ final 12 points. LeBron James, who recorded 22 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, exited in the fourth quarter due to a strained groin.
Luka Doncic carried the Lakers’ offense, finishing with 34 points and eight rebounds in his first game in Boston since the Celtics defeated Dallas in the 2024 NBA Finals. Austin Reaves contributed 16 points, while Dorian Finney-Smith and Jarred Vanderbilt combined for 12.
Boston’s defense played a crucial role, holding the Lakers to just 21% shooting in the third quarter while forcing six turnovers. Jrue Holiday returned from injury and provided seven points, five rebounds, and a steady defensive presence. Kristaps Porzingis remained sidelined due to illness.
The Lakers struggled offensively in the second half, managing only 13 points in the third quarter. Doncic’s frustration grew after an inadvertent knee to the head from Al Horford during a fast-break collision, but no foul was called.
Tatum took over late in the game, scoring in multiple ways and going 10-of-12 from the free-throw line. Brown attacked the rim aggressively, helping Boston maintain control as Los Angeles threatened to close the gap.
Defensively, the Celtics limited the Lakers to 35% shooting from three-point range while forcing 12 turnovers. Boston’s frontcourt, anchored by Horford and Luke Kornet, controlled the glass with a 45-43 rebounding advantage.
