Gregg Popovich spoke to the San Antonio Spurs players for the first time on Thursday since experiencing a stroke in November.
During his address, he provided an update on his recovery process and informed the team that he would not be able to return to coaching on the sidelines for the remainder of the season.
In Popovich’s absence, Mitch Johnson has been fulfilling the role of acting head coach, guiding the team through the season.
The Spurs have remained competitive and in contention for a spot in the play-in tournament; however, they now face another setback as star rookie Victor Wembanyama has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a blood clot in his shoulder.
Following his address to the team, Popovich also shared an official statement with the public:
“I’ve decided not to return to the sidelines this season. Mitch Johnson and his staff have done a wonderful job and the resolve and professionalism the players have shown, sticking together during a challenging season, has been outstanding. I will continue to focus on my health with the hope that I can return to coaching in the future.”
