Former Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Phil Handy shared how LeBron James played a key role in Austin Reaves’ development.

Speaking with NBA insider Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson, Handy revealed that James recognized Reaves’ potential early on and pushed him hard in practice. “LeBron is one of those dudes that when he recognizes talent, especially in young players, he’s pretty hard on them,” Handy said. “He was tough on Austin because he saw his potential—how smart he was, how well he understood the game.”

Reaves initially struggled with James’ demanding approach but had a shift in perspective after a conversation with Handy. “LeBron was on him every day—about little things in the game, on offense, on defense—just staying on him,” Handy recalled. “But once we sat down and talked, I told him, ‘It’s because he sees potential in you. He believes in you. He’s going to push you to play well, to play smart, to be efficient.’”

According to Handy, Reaves’ understanding of James’ intentions changed his mindset and allowed him to embrace constructive criticism. “Once Austin saw it from that perspective, it changed his whole thought process,” Handy explained. “It allowed him to take criticism from teammates and understand that if LeBron is on you, he sees something in you that can elevate your game.”

Reaves, 26, has shown steady improvement since entering the league as an undrafted rookie. This season, he is averaging a career-high 19.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game.

The Lakers, currently fourth in the Western Conference with a 35-21 record, have benefited from Reaves’ growth alongside James. As the team pushes for a deep playoff run, Reaves continues to be a key contributor under James’ leadership.
