Kevin Garnett may be on the verge of returning to the Minnesota Timberwolves in an official capacity.
According to Charles Waters of TwinCities Pioneer Press, Garnett is expected to take on a front-office role once Alex Rodriguez and Marc Lore officially assume ownership of the franchise.
“A little birdie says Kevin Garnett will become part of the Timberwolves’ front office as soon as it’s official that Lore and Rodriguez get ownership,” Waters reported.
Rodriguez and Lore recently won their arbitration case against current owner Glen Taylor, who had contested the terms of their 2021 purchase agreement. The ruling determined that the two investors did not violate the agreement, moving them one step closer to gaining full control of the Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. However, the sale still requires approval from the NBA’s Board of Governors before it is finalized.
Taylor, who has owned the franchise since 1994, expressed disappointment with the decision. He has stated that he will thoroughly review the ruling before determining his next course of action.
Garnett, one of the most iconic figures in Timberwolves history, has long expressed interest in a front-office role with the team. Drafted fifth overall in 1995, he spent 14 seasons in Minnesota across two stints. He won the NBA MVP award in 2004 after leading the Wolves to their only Western Conference Finals appearance.
Following a trade to the Boston Celtics in 2007, Garnett won an NBA championship in 2008 before later finishing his career back in Minnesota. He retired in 2016 and was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020.
Garnett previously had a strained relationship with Taylor, which prevented him from taking an active role with the franchise. However, with Rodriguez and Lore nearing full ownership, that dynamic appears to be shifting.
If Garnett officially joins the front office, it would mark a significant moment for the Timberwolves, bringing back the franchise’s most legendary player in an executive role.
