The San Antonio Spurs remain optimistic that Victor Wembanyama will be back on the court next season despite a recent setback with a blood clot in his right shoulder.
According to ESPN’s NBA insider Shams Charania, Wembanyama, 21, is doing emotionally well as he works through treatment options with the Spurs. The team has expressed confidence that the injury will not have long-term effects.
“They believe that the clot in his right shoulder is isolated, and they believe he will play next season,” Charania reported.
On February 20, the Spurs decided to shut Wembanyama down for the remainder of the 2024-25 season after discovering deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. The diagnosis was a blow to the team, but it appears to be a manageable issue, as no long-term damage is expected.
Sources close to the situation have also revealed that Wembanyama and head coach Gregg Popovich have been in constant communication since the diagnosis. Charania noted that Popovich has been very hands-on, offering support and guidance during this challenging time for the young star.
Wembanyama has had an impressive second season in the NBA, averaging 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks per game in 46 appearances. His performances have been one of the bright spots for the Spurs, who currently sit 12th in the Western Conference with a 24-31 record.
The Spurs are hopeful that Wembanyama’s recovery progresses smoothly and that he will be ready for the 2025-26 season. The team’s focus now shifts to supporting his health and ensuring he can make a full recovery before the next campaign.
Wembanyama, widely regarded as one of the most talented young players in the league, has been a key figure for San Antonio since being drafted first overall in the 2023 NBA Draft.
