LeBron James delivered a stunning performance for the Los Angeles Lakers, leading them to a 110-102 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night. Despite being 40 years old and playing the second game of a back-to-back, James scored 40 points, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s fiercest competitors.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick shared his admiration for the superstar’s relentless approach. “He’s a billionaire playing on the 2nd night of a back-to-back at 40,” Redick said. “He’s one of the greatest competitors… he’s amazing to coach, he brings it every single day, he sets the standard at how you’re supposed to approach this craft.”
James wasn’t alone in his efforts. Austin Reaves also stepped up, contributing 32 points to secure the win for the Lakers. The victory improves Los Angeles’ record to 33-21, keeping them firmly in the top five in the Western Conference.
Portland’s Deni Avdija led his team with 28 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Lakers’ late-game surge. After Portland tied the game at 81, Reaves put the Lakers back in front with a clutch scoop shot. James followed with an explosive stretch, scoring eight straight points to give Los Angeles an 89-81 lead.
The Blazers tried to respond, but James hit another jumper to extend the Lakers’ lead to 95-86. Reaves sealed the game with three free throws, pushing the advantage back to double digits.
Portland, currently 13th in the Western Conference, struggled with free throws, converting just 67% of their attempts. In contrast, the Lakers were a perfect 92% from the line, converting 23 of 25.
The Lakers also faced a short-handed Portland squad missing Deandre Ayton due to injury. Rookie center Donovan Clingan showed promise, finishing with six points and six rebounds in his extended role.
