An unnamed NBA executive recently speculated about the possibility of the Memphis Grizzlies exploring a trade involving Ja Morant this offseason.
However, the team’s general manager, Zach Kleiman, wasted no time in shutting down that notion, making it clear that Morant remains an essential part of the franchise’s future.
“I can’t blame other ‘executives’ for fantasizing about us trading Ja,” Kleiman stated. “But it’s just that – fantasy. We are not trading Ja. Continue to underestimate Ja, this team, and this city, and we will let our performance on the floor speak for itself. I’m not going to give this nonsense further oxygen and look forward to getting back to basketball.”
Morant, who has battled injuries and setbacks this season, has still managed to deliver strong performances when on the court. In 32 games, he is averaging 20.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.4 assists while playing 28.8 minutes per contest.
The Grizzlies have taken a cautious approach with their star guard, carefully managing his playing time and workload to prioritize his health in preparation for the postseason.
Beyond the immediate focus on this season, the Grizzlies face important long-term decisions. Both Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. will be eligible for contract extensions this summer, which could significantly shape the team’s future financial flexibility.
The organization appeared to anticipate these upcoming negotiations by moving Marcus Smart at the trade deadline, potentially signaling an effort to create more financial breathing room.
