Julius Erving expressed skepticism about building a championship team around Joel Embiid due to his ongoing injury struggles. Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, the Hall of Famer addressed Embiid’s durability concerns and how they impact Philadelphia’s long-term aspirations.

“If he moves to playing one-third of the games, that’s not going to happen,” Erving said. “And he just got a new contract. You always say it’s not a guy’s fault if his body’s betraying him. But that’s an excuse. When you’re running an organization and you’re trying to chase for championships, you’re trying to be the leader and inspire the other players, you have to find a way.”

Embiid, 30, has appeared in only 17 games this season due to knee issues. Despite averaging 24.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 30.4 minutes per game, his absence has significantly affected the 76ers.

Last season, he posted dominant numbers with 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game but played just 39 games.

The Sixers currently sit 11th in the Eastern Conference with a 20-34 record, struggling to stay competitive without their star center. His latest injury setback has raised concerns about whether he can be relied upon for a deep playoff run.

Embiid’s contract situation adds another layer of complexity. He signed a four-year, $213 million extension, committing the Sixers to him through the 2026-27 season. If injuries persist, the franchise will face difficult decisions regarding its future.

Philadelphia has consistently built its roster around Embiid, but postseason success has been elusive. The team has yet to advance past the second round during his tenure, and health has often played a role in those shortcomings.
