Jimmy Butler addressed his trade to the Golden State Warriors, offering a candid reaction to his departure from the Miami Heat. After multiple suspensions and a tumultuous season, Butler made it clear that he is ready for a fresh start.
“I’m very, very happy I’m not getting suspended any more,” Butler said, per Anthony Slater. The six-time All-Star had been at the center of controversy in Miami, with repeated disciplinary actions leading to his eventual trade.
Despite reports suggesting that Butler preferred a move to the Phoenix Suns, he did not confirm those claims. “The best part about everything is I never say anything, so nobody knows what is actually going on,” he said.
Butler’s time in Miami unraveled quickly, beginning with a seven-game suspension on January 3 due to conduct detrimental to the team. After returning on January 17, he was suspended again on January 22 for missing a team flight to Milwaukee.
His final days with the Heat ended in further turmoil when he walked out of practice on January 27 upon learning that Haywood Highsmith would be starting over him. Miami responded by suspending him indefinitely, making it clear that his time with the franchise was coming to an end.
On February 6, the Heat finalized a five-team trade, sending Butler to Golden State in exchange for a package centered around Andrew Wiggins. Shortly after the deal, Butler signed a two-year, $121 million extension with the Warriors, declining his player option for the 2025-26 season.
Butler reflected on his tenure with the Heat, showing no ill will toward the organization. “They gave me opportunity. I felt like I did my job to the highest level,” he said, per Tim Reynolds. “I have so much respect for that organization, for the people that’s running that organization, and for my former teammates. And I’m always going to wish them the best.”
The Warriors, who have struggled to stay competitive in the Western Conference, hope Butler’s arrival will provide a much-needed boost.
