The Charlotte Hornets are reportedly exploring the possibility of trading forward Josh Okogie before the upcoming trade deadline, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. Okogie was recently acquired by Charlotte in a trade with the Phoenix Suns but has yet to make his debut for the team.

The Hornets acquired the 26-year-old forward, along with three future second-round picks, in exchange for center Nick Richards and one second-round pick on January 15. Despite joining the roster, Okogie’s role with the rebuilding Hornets remains uncertain as the team evaluates its long-term strategy.

Okogie is averaging 6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14 minutes per game this season. The defensive specialist is in the first year of a two-year, $16 million contract, which makes him an appealing option for teams looking for a cost-effective addition with defensive versatility.

Charlotte, currently 13th in the Eastern Conference with a 10-28 record, is firmly in rebuilding mode. With limited postseason aspirations, the Hornets are prioritizing asset accumulation and developing younger players. Moving Okogie could align with their focus on future draft capital and roster flexibility.

Stein hinted in his report that Charlotte might have additional plans involving Okogie, potentially aiming to expand on the value they received in the Richards trade. The addition of three second-round picks in that deal already bolstered their draft assets, and trading Okogie could further aid their rebuilding efforts.
