The Phoenix Suns bolstered their frontcourt by acquiring Nick Richards from the Charlotte Hornets in a trade that also included draft picks and Josh Okogie heading to Charlotte. Kevin Durant shared his thoughts on the move, expressing optimism about Richards’ impact on the team.

“He’s a strong presence in the paint, a big body that can wreak havoc down there and cause some problems with his rim protection,” Durant said, pe Duane Rankin. “Getting his hands on the basketball on the offensive glass and then finishing above the rim is something we all have to get better at as a group. Hopefully, he leads us in that area, just controlling the paint.”

Richards, a 7-foot center, has been a consistent performer for Charlotte this season, averaging 11.3 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. Known for his efficiency, Richards has converted 65% of his field goal attempts over the last four seasons. His rim protection and rebounding ability address key areas of need for the Suns, who have struggled with interior defense.

In return, the Hornets received Okogie, a versatile forward who has averaged 6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14 minutes per game this season. Okogie brings defensive tenacity and depth to Charlotte’s wing rotation, aligning with the team’s long-term focus on player development.

Durant expressed gratitude for Okogie’s contributions to the Suns, saying, “I really appreciated how Josh approached the game and his love for his teammates. I wish him the best. I’m sure we’ll cross paths again. He’s a great teammate, but I’m looking forward to having Nick on the team.”

The trade also involved multiple draft picks, with Phoenix acquiring a 2025 second-round pick from Denver. Charlotte, meanwhile, gained three second-round picks: Denver’s 2026 and 2031 selections, along with Phoenix’s 2031 pick. These assets provide the Hornets additional flexibility as they continue to rebuild their roster.
