When it comes to managing his ongoing back issue, the Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving has sought guidance from someone with firsthand experience – assistant coach Jared Dudley.
Dudley, a former NBA player with a long career, understands the challenges of dealing with back injuries, having faced his own battle with a severe back problem that ultimately required surgery.
“I had a back injury myself, and it was much more severe than Kyrie’s,” Dudley explained in an interview with Grant Afseth and Rashad Miller of DallasHoopsJournal.com.
“Mine eventually led to back surgery, so I have a pretty good understanding of the situation. Kyrie’s injury is less serious than mine, but any back injury often affects the nerve, which can be quite troublesome.”
The coach went on to offer advice on how Irving could manage the injury, particularly emphasizing the importance of a technique known as nerve gliding.
“There’s a method called nerve gliding that helps the nerve recover and get back on track. It’s an important part of the healing process for anyone with a back injury.”
Additionally, the former forward noted that Irving would need to follow a core regimen to keep his body stable and reduce the risk of further injury.
“Kyrie is someone who already follows a strict routine, which is a great asset when it comes to recovery,” Dudley continued. “Now, it’s just about maintaining that regimen and staying consistent.
“With the right approach, he’ll be able to manage this injury and stay on track for the rest of the season.”
Irving has played 14 seasons for 4 teams, including the Cavaliers and Nets. He has averaged 23.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 4.0 rebounds in 760 regular-season games.
He was selected to play in 8 All-Star games. He has won the Rookie of the Year award and 1 NBA championship.
