After expressing that he didn’t want Golden State Warriors’ general manager Mike Dunleavy to make a “desperate” move before the trade deadline, Stephen Curry sought to clarify his position, reaffirming that his desire to win remains strong.
Curry’s comments came after the Warriors secured a hard-fought victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, a narrow win that added further weight to his words.
“Anyone who thinks I’m OK being on an average basketball team is insane,” the guard stated with conviction. “I stand by everything I said previously, but it’s important to clarify that I’m not saying we’re not actively trying to improve.
“We’re still in a position where we want to get better and make the right moves to help us do that. Mike knows that, and we’ve had conversations about it. That’s the expectation I have: to improve and make the necessary moves – but we’re not talking about being reckless in the process.”
Curry also addressed the perception that he might be advocating for rash decisions.
“What people sometimes interpret as desperation is what I was referring to with all the talk on Twitter and trade machines. They’re fun, but that’s not reality. What’s the actual picture here? We’ll handle our business, Mike will handle his, and we’ll see where we end up. But we’re focused on the right kind of moves.”
Head coach Steve Kerr echoed Curry’s sentiments, emphasizing that the Warriors are not giving up on their season. He also addressed the misconception that the team might be in a state of surrender.
“I hope people don’t think we’re not fighting. We’re doing everything in our power to keep this thing going,” Kerr said. “It almost seems like there’s a narrative that the Warriors are giving up, but that’s not the case.
“We’re not giving in – we just won’t sacrifice the future of this franchise for short-term gains. Those are two completely different things. We’re still in the fight.”
Both Curry and Kerr made it clear that, while the Warriors are carefully considering their options and not taking reckless actions, they are fully committed to competing and maintaining the long-term health and success of the franchise.
