The Detroit Pistons have officially signed Tolu Smith to a two-way contract, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. This marks a significant milestone for the 24-year-old forward/center, who has impressed with his play in the G League this season.

Smith, a standout from Mississippi State, has averaged 15.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in five games with the Motor City Cruise.

Before entering the professional ranks, Smith showcased steady improvement throughout his college career. After transferring from Western Kentucky to Mississippi State, he emerged as one of the top players in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

During his senior season in 2022–23, Smith averaged 15.7 points per game while leading the SEC with a 57.2% field goal percentage. His efforts earned him a spot on the All-SEC First Team.

Smith declared for the 2023 NBA Draft but opted to return to Mississippi State for an additional year of eligibility. In the 2023–24 season, he maintained his strong form, averaging 15 points and 8 rebounds per game, which earned him another All-SEC First Team nod.

Despite going undrafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, Smith joined the Pistons for Summer League action. While he initially signed with the Pistons in September, he was waived in October before joining the Motor City Cruise, Detroit’s G League affiliate.

Smith’s return to the Pistons on a two-way contract highlights his perseverance and development. Two-way contracts allow players to split time between the NBA and G League, giving Smith an opportunity to contribute at the highest level.
