As the NBA trade deadline approaches, Jimmy Butler’s future with the Miami Heat is shrouded in uncertainty. NBA insider Shams Charania recently identified the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors as the top suitors for the 35-year-old star.

Charania revealed on ESPN’s NBA Countdown that the 35-year-old forward prefers a move to either of these win-now franchises ahead of the February 6 deadline. While Miami is reportedly open to listening to offers, Charania noted there is no urgency in the Heat’s trade talks at this stage.

“Sources tell me Butler prefers a trade out of Miami,” Charania said. “The Suns and Warriors are atop his preferred destinations. While Butler has made it clear he’s ready for an exit, he has remained professional this season.”

The situation stems from Miami’s decision not to offer Butler a contract extension last offseason. Instead, the franchise has shifted its focus to building around younger stars like Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Despite Butler’s repeated calls for roster upgrades in recent years, Miami has been unable to acquire major stars such as Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, or Kyrie Irving.

Butler is currently in the second year of a three-year, $146.4 million contract. The deal includes a player option for the 2025-26 season, which he is widely expected to decline, potentially making him a free agent. This season, Butler is averaging 18.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game while playing 31.4 minutes.

The Heat are sixth in the Eastern Conference with a 14-13 record, but their struggles to meet Butler’s expectations have fueled speculation about his future. Meanwhile, the Suns, sitting at 14-14 and 11th in the Western Conference, and the Warriors, with a 15-13 record and the 8th spot in the West, are both vying for opportunities to enhance their rosters ahead of the postseason.
