Victor Wembanyama delivered a career-best performance, scoring 42 points to propel the San Antonio Spurs (14-13) to a 133-126 overtime victory against the Atlanta Hawks (14-14) on Thursday night. The French center was instrumental in the extra period, tallying eight crucial points to secure the win.
Wembanyama shot 13-for-24 from the field, including an impressive 7-for-15 from beyond the arc, and added six rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and two steals to his stat line.
The Spurs snapped their two-game skid, with Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan contributing 23 and 20 points, respectively.
Devin Vassell made his first start of the season after returning from offseason foot surgery. His presence allowed San Antonio to utilize its projected starting lineup for the first time this year. Chris Paul added 12 points, with 10 coming in the fourth quarter and overtime, including a critical four-point play that sent the game into overtime.
Atlanta was led by De’Andre Hunter, who scored 27 points off the bench, while Trae Young contributed 23 points and 16 assists. Jalen Johnson chipped in with 22 points and nine rebounds. Despite their efforts, the Hawks could not contain the Spurs in the second half, where San Antonio went on a 25-14 run to turn an 11-point halftime deficit into a five-point lead.
The final minutes of regulation featured a dramatic exchange of three-pointers. With Atlanta holding a 118-115 advantage, Wembanyama, Vassell, and Johnson traded clutch shots. Paul’s four-point play with 57 seconds left gave the Spurs a narrow lead, but the Hawks forced overtime with a free throw from Clint Capela.
In overtime, Wembanyama continued his dominance, scoring from the perimeter and the paint. His two blocks on key possessions stifled Atlanta’s offense, ensuring San Antonio’s victory.
The Hawks struggled with inefficiency from their starters, including Dyson Daniels, who was limited to four points on 2-for-6 shooting. However, Larry Nance Jr. provided a spark off the bench, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
