The Phoenix Suns are reportedly navigating a complicated but intriguing opportunity to acquire Jimmy Butler, as mutual interest between the team and the player has been widely suggested.
However, making such a move happen is far from straightforward.
For the Suns, the only plausible pathway to adding Butler would involve trading Bradley Beal, as both Devin Booker and Kevin Durant are viewed as cornerstone players and therefore untouchable in any trade discussions.
This scenario hinges on Beal, who has a no-trade clause and would need to approve any potential move.
Compounding matters, Beal has two years remaining on his contract, along with a history of injuries and a decline in performance since his last All-Star appearance in 2021.
The Golden State Warriors have also been linked to Butler but appear to be taking a more cautious approach.
They are prioritizing evaluating their existing roster before seriously exploring a trade for the Miami Heat star. The Warriors have made adjustments to their lineup, including starting Jonathan Kuminga and integrating Dennis Schroder into key roles.
The organization is reportedly in no rush, preferring to see how their current pieces perform together before potentially revisiting a Butler deal.
Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets, two other teams reportedly on Butler’s preferred destination list, are not actively pursuing the star player. This leaves the Suns as the most viable candidate, though their path remains precarious.
“The Suns and Jimmy Butler are believed to have a level of mutual interest,” Shams Charania stated on NBA Today this Tuesday.
“The Warriors are in more of a situation of ‘we’ll see.’ They have Jonathan Kuminga in the starting lineup right now. They’re trying to figure out what this team looks like with Dennis Schroder.”
Charania noted the inherently speculative nature of trade discussions in the league, adding, “Usually in this league when two sides, you know, we’ll see.”
Another complicating factor in Butler’s future is the lack of teams projected to have significant cap space during the 2025 offseason.
The Brooklyn Nets are expected to have the necessary flexibility to sign Butler outright if he becomes a free agent, but Charania downplayed their likelihood of pursuing him in a non-sign-and-trade scenario.
The Heat, therefore, may find themselves in a position of strength when it comes to negotiating Butler’s future, whether he stays in Miami or ends up elsewhere.
