The San Antonio Spurs honored Chris Paul with a special ceremony and video tribute on Sunday night as he moved into second place on the NBA’s all-time assists list, as reported by Michael C. Wright of ESPN.
The 39-year-old point guard achieved this milestone by surpassing Jason Kidd with his third assist of the game midway through the second quarter.
In recognition of his achievement, Paul was presented with a commemorative ball and a photo that listed all 173 players who have received assists from him throughout his legendary career.
“It’s an amazing accomplishment,” said interim coach Mitch Johnson. “It’s a privilege to be able to see it up close and personal. We are witnessing greatness. A lot of us have competed against him. We’ve all watched him.
“And to be able to experience it firsthand is a privilege. He’s still doing it at a high level. We are grateful for that. He deserves all the praise and attention that comes with that because it’s a hell of an honor.”
Having started his career in 2005 with the New Orleans Hornets, Paul found it especially meaningful to reach this milestone against the New Orleans Pelicans. Reflecting on his career, he also recalled a moment when he was on the receiving end of one of Jason Kidd’s major milestones.
“He got his 100th triple-double against me,” Paul shared. “[The milestone] means I have played a long time. But J. Kidd did, too, and that’s what I appreciate.
“I don’t think people realize the longer you play in this league, the longer you pay attention to the guys who had longevity. So, [I’m] definitely grateful to still be here.”
Paul has had a 20-season career across seven teams, including the Clippers and Hornets. Over 1,296 regular-season games, he has averaged 17.4 points, 9.3 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.0 steals. He has earned 12 All-Star selections and was named Rookie of the Year.
