Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has publicly supported head coach Steve Kerr’s decision to replace him with Jonathan Kuminga in the starting lineup. The move reflects Kerr’s focus on developing the 22-year-old as a key piece of the franchise’s future.

Green, as reported by Anthony Slater of The Athletic, expressed confidence in Kuminga’s potential, describing him as “next” for the Warriors. “For him to do that, he needs the opportunity. If the opportunity falls on you — being me — then, that’s what it is,” Green said.

Kuminga has started in seven of the Warriors’ 20 games this season, averaging 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in just under 24 minutes per game. As a starter, his production increases slightly to 15.4 points and 4 rebounds in over 25 minutes per game.

Green, a four-time NBA champion and former Defensive Player of the Year, acknowledged the importance of supporting Kuminga’s development. “I have been one of JK’s biggest fans since he’s been here,” Green said. He added that giving Kuminga the chance to start is crucial, even if it means altering his own role.

The decision to promote Kuminga aligns with Golden State’s strategy to integrate younger talent into its veteran-heavy roster. While Kuminga’s performances have shown flashes of brilliance, the team is balancing development with its competitive aspirations in the Western Conference.

Despite stepping into a new role, Green emphasized his commitment to the team’s success. “If his opportunity goes through me, then it is what it is. He earned the opportunity,” Green noted, showing his leadership in navigating the transition.

The Warriors have leaned on Kuminga for his athleticism, scoring versatility, and defensive potential. His growth has been a priority since being selected seventh overall in the 2021 NBA Draft. The team hopes his expanded role will accelerate his development as a core player.
