Victor Wembanyama delivered a stellar performance, recording his first triple-double of the season with 34 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists, leading the San Antonio Spurs to a 127-125 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Sunday night.
The Spurs (11-9) continued their strong play, securing their fifth win in six games. Despite trailing by 17 points early in the first quarter, San Antonio mounted a comeback to edge out Sacramento (9-12). Devin Vassell provided a spark off the bench, scoring 21 points, while Chris Paul chipped in with 13.
Sacramento entered halftime with a 65-58 lead, but the Spurs shifted momentum in the third quarter, outscoring the Kings 19-7 to take a brief lead. However, Sacramento regained control, heading into the final frame with a 97-92 advantage.
Wembanyama’s clutch play in the fourth quarter helped guide San Antonio to victory. He drained five 3-pointers and scored 13 points in the final period. With the game tied and just 20 seconds left, Paul hit a crucial three-pointer, putting the Spurs ahead.
With the Spurs holding a two-point lead and nine seconds remaining, Keldon Johnson missed a free throw but grabbed his own rebound. Paul then hit two more free throws, extending the lead to five points. Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis drained a three at the buzzer, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Spurs.
San Antonio’s three-point shooting was key to their success, as they set a franchise record with 23 made threes, shooting 50% from beyond the arc. The Spurs also tightened up defensively after allowing 42 points in the first quarter, limiting the Kings’ scoring in the latter stages.
The loss extended Sacramento’s struggles, as they have now dropped six of their last seven games. DeMar DeRozan led the Kings with 28 points, and Domantas Sabonis added 25 points and 13 rebounds. De’Aaron Fox also contributed 23 points, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
The Kings shot 46.5% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range, but their early lead could not withstand the Spurs’ second-half surge. San Antonio, on the other hand, shot 51.2% from the field, with Wembanyama’s all-around performance lifting the team to victory.
