According to sources cited by Ian Begley of SNY, the NBA has reportedly reached out to the New York Knicks to examine whether the promotion of assistant coach Rick Brunson complied with the league’s salary cap regulations.

Rick Brunson was elevated to a new role during the 2024 offseason, coinciding with his son, Jalen Brunson, securing a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension with the team. Notably, Jalen could have qualified for a $270 million maximum extension had he waited until the 2025 offseason to negotiate.

The Knicks have dismissed the league’s inquiry as unwarranted. The organization described it as “harassment,” firmly defending Rick Brunson’s promotion.

“In response to the rumored NBA investigation into Rick Brunson’s promotion, Brunson took (former associate head coach) Johnnie Bryant’s place and assumed the same salary as Bryant. It’s offensive that anyone would claim Rick didn’t deserve the promotion,” stated MSG Sports in a formal release.
