De’Aaron Fox scored a franchise-record 60 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Sacramento Kings fell 130-126 to the Minnesota Timberwolves in a thrilling NBA Cup overtime game on Friday night.
Despite Fox’s historic performance, the Kings were short-handed, missing key players in DeMar DeRozan and Malik Monk.
The Timberwolves were led by Anthony Edwards, who scored 36 points. Edwards carried Minnesota during the extra session, making five straight shots after Fox’s early 3-pointer in overtime.
The Kings fought back from a 20-point deficit in the second half, with Fox leading the charge. His 26 points in the fourth quarter and overtime were crucial in tying the game late, but Sacramento could not secure the win.
Julius Randle made a driving layup with under a minute left to give the Timberwolves a two-point lead. Fox then missed a floater that would have tied the game, and Edwards sealed the victory with a deep 2-pointer with 14.1 seconds left.
Domantas Sabonis contributed 23 points and 12 rebounds for the Kings, while Randle finished with 26 points and Naz Reid added 16 for the Timberwolves.
The game saw intense back-and-forth action, with the Timberwolves leading 62-54 at halftime, after building a double-digit lead in the first quarter. Sacramento’s defense came alive in the second half, going on a 14-0 run to start the fourth quarter.
Fox’s remarkable 60-point game was the first 50-point performance for the Kings since 2016, surpassing DeMarcus Cousins’ 56-point game. His stellar shooting included 22 field goals from 35 attempts and six 3-pointers.
While the Timberwolves played with great depth, with seven players scoring in double figures, the Kings’ loss highlighted the impact of missing DeRozan and Monk. Sacramento’s limited bench struggled to provide consistent scoring support, which hurt their efforts down the stretch.
