Victor Wembanyama has struggled with his shooting early in the season, connecting on just 14 of 62 three-point attempts, which equates to 22.6 percent. His overall field goal percentage stands at 41 percent.
While Wembanyama is already widely regarded as one of the NBA’s premier defensive players, his ability to generate consistent and efficient offense will be key to determining his long-term success and potential.
“He’s absolutely awesome on defense, and not impactful at all on offense,” an opposing scout, who strongly believes in Wembanyama’s future potential, told ESPN. “He just looks like he’s playing without a whole lot of direction.”
Despite his defensive brilliance, some scouts believe that Wembanyama’s shooting struggles are holding him back. “There’s a reason he’s shooting so many,” another scout shared with ESPN, “but it still feels like he’s giving the opposition a break every time he does it right now.”
One additional scout noted that Wembanyama seems to be fatigued early in the season, likely due to his extensive schedule, which included 71 NBA games followed by participation in the Paris Olympics.
Looking at his performance from last season, Wembanyama had a rough start, shooting just 26.3 percent from beyond the arc in October and November.
His shooting improved to 41.3 percent in February, before dipping again to 30.8 percent in March. This inconsistency in his shooting will be something to monitor as he continues to develop his offensive game.
