The NBA announced Saturday night that it is launching an investigation into an altercation involving Joel Embiid and Philadelphia Inquirer columnist Marcus Hayes, in which Embiid allegedly shoved Hayes in the 76ers’ locker room.
“We are aware of reports of an incident in the Sixers locker room this evening and are commencing an investigation,” stated an NBA spokesperson, confirming the league’s response to the incident.
The confrontation reportedly stemmed from Embiid’s anger over a recent column by Hayes that referenced both Embiid’s young son and his late brother, sensitive topics for the star player.
As players entered the locker room following the Sixers’ loss to the Grizzlies, Embiid confronted Hayes, saying, “The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you and I’m going to have to … live with the consequences.”
In response, Hayes reportedly offered an apology, but Embiid rejected it, escalating tensions. Embiid went on to say he doesn’t care about reporters’ opinions, to which Hayes responded, “but you do.” This comment reportedly triggered Embiid further, leading him to raise his voice and shove Hayes on the shoulder.
Team officials and security staff intervened, stepping between the two and asking reporters in the room not to publicize the incident. Embiid, however, remained unfazed by potential fallout, reportedly stating, “They can do whatever they want. I don’t give a s—.”
The incident has placed the team and league in a difficult position, with potential disciplinary actions and further investigation likely to follow.
