The Los Angeles Lakers have opted not to pick up the third-year option on guard Jalen Hood-Schifino’s rookie contract, a decision that means he will no longer be under contract for the 2025-2026 season, forfeiting a guaranteed $4 million salary for that year.

Hood-Schifino, known for his versatility and potential on both ends of the court, entered the NBA as the 17th overall pick in the 2023 draft, joining the Lakers following a successful college career at Indiana University.

The Lakers’ choice signals a strategic decision as the team continues to evaluate its roster and prioritize flexibility in the coming seasons.

As a result of this decision, Hood-Schifino will become an unrestricted free agent in the 2025 offseason, allowing him the opportunity to explore other teams and potentially secure a new contract without restrictions.

Represented by prominent agent Austin Brown, who has a strong track record of guiding athletes through their professional careers, Hood-Schifino will have the freedom to assess his options as he works to establish a more substantial role in the league.

During his rookie season, Hood-Schifino made 21 appearances for the Lakers. While his minutes were limited – averaging only 5.2 per game – he posted modest stats with 1.6 points and 0.6 rebounds.

His progress was hampered by a back injury that required surgical intervention in March, which effectively ended his debut season prematurely.

This recovery process, however, presents an opportunity for Hood-Schifino to focus on rehabilitation and improvement before re-entering free agency, where he will look to prove his value to potential teams in search of young talent with room to grow.
