Gordon Hayward recently revealed a critical weakness in Rudy Gobert’s defensive game during an appearance on the Pat Bev Podcast with Rone. Hayward, who played alongside Gobert for several seasons with the Utah Jazz, discussed the challenges Gobert faces when defending perimeter players.

“He always had problems guarding around the perimeter,” Hayward stated, via ClutchPoints. “Anytime we played a quick guard that could also shoot, it was tough for us.” This assessment highlights the difficulties Gobert encounters when tasked with defending agile players on the perimeter.

Hayward recalled specific instances where Gobert struggled against notable guards, particularly during matchups against the Boston Celtics. “We had really tough times against Boston when they had IT (Isaiah Thomas). We had really tough times against Kemba, and we had really tough times against Dame,” Hayward explained.

The former Jazz forward emphasized that Gobert’s size can become a disadvantage. “If he came out too far, they go right around him. If he’s back at all, they’re just shooting,” he noted.

Gobert’s defensive capabilities are well-documented. He has won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award four times, tying him with Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace for the most in league history.

During the 2023-24 season, Gobert continued to demonstrate his defensive prowess. He played a pivotal role in anchoring the Minnesota Timberwolves’ top-ranked defense.

As the 2024-25 season progresses, Gobert signed a lucrative three-year, $110 million contract extension with the Timberwolves in October. He is currently averaging 9.5 points, 11.8 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, and 1.3 assists per game.
