The Philadelphia 76ers have emerged as a team with potential interest in acquiring Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, according to insider Jake Fischer.
The Sixers may leverage the contract of K.J. Martin and utilize their future draft picks as assets in a possible trade for Kuminga, adding a young, high-upside player to their roster.
Talks between Kuminga and the Warriors over a contract extension reportedly failed to gain traction, with both sides not reaching any meaningful agreement.
However, sources suggest that the Warriors would be ‘happy to pay’ Kuminga should he prove capable of performing consistently at an elite level, especially if he can do so over an extended sample of games.
Fischer commented on the Sixers’ willingness to make significant moves: ‘The Sixers have definitely indicated around the league and behind the scenes that they are willing to pay to add in another piece. They are willing to spend their draft capital.’
In line with their win-now ambitions, the Sixers’ ownership group appears prepared to exceed the luxury tax threshold if it positions the team closer to a championship, a move underscoring their commitment to maximizing their title chances.
Meanwhile, the Brooklyn Nets have also been mentioned as potential suitors for Kuminga, with the team projected to have considerable cap space. Brooklyn is reportedly prepared to put together a competitive offer.
‘There’s already been rumblings of Brooklyn potentially willing to throw a big offer sheet at Jonathan Kuminga,’ Fischer noted, highlighting the Nets’ interest in adding a dynamic young talent to their lineup.
In addition to Kuminga, Fischer pointed out that both the Sixers and the Nets had previously shown interest in Trey Murphy III before he agreed to an extension with the New Orleans Pelicans.
Murphy was another young forward with substantial potential who could have provided either team with the kind of athleticism and shooting they are seeking.
This further underscores the eagerness of both franchises to add players who can contribute to their title pursuits and long-term success.
