The Golden State Warriors and forward Jonathan Kuminga could not reach an agreement on a rookie extension, despite his strong performance in the 2023-24 season. Kuminga reportedly sought a $30 million annual salary, which the franchise was unwilling to offer.
Warriors General Manager Mike Dunleavy spoke to the media about the situation. “There’s no overreaction to not getting Kuminga an extension,” Dunleavy said, per Kendra Andrews. He emphasized that the organization’s hopes for Kuminga’s future remain unchanged, adding, “Sometimes these things get done, sometimes they don’t…Hope to get something done in the offseason.”
In the previous season, Kuminga averaged a career-high 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 26.4 minutes per game. His development has been notable, as he has emerged as a key contributor for the Warriors.
Currently, Kuminga is in the final year of his four-year, $24.8 million rookie contract. The lack of an extension has raised questions about his long-term role with the team. However, his performance in the upcoming season could influence the franchise’s decision-making.
Teammate Draymond Green weighed in on Kuminga’s potential, stating that he expects the young forward to make the All-Star team during the 2024-25 season. Green added that failing to achieve this milestone would be considered a setback for Kuminga.
