Keita Bates-Diop’s absence from the Minnesota Timberwolves’ practice on Saturday has fueled speculation that he may be the player left off the roster as the team finalizes its lineup for the upcoming regular season.

The Timberwolves currently have 16 players under standard contracts, but only 15 roster spots are available, meaning a difficult decision must be made.

The competition for the final roster spot appears to be between Bates-Diop and veteran guard P.J. Dozier.

Earlier this offseason, the Timberwolves signed Dozier to a $1 million partially guaranteed contract, indicating that he has a strong chance of making the team.

Dozier’s ability to play multiple positions and contribute defensively may have given him an edge in the competition.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are reportedly exploring trade possibilities for Bates-Diop, hoping to move the 6-foot-8 forward rather than cut him outright.

If the team is unable to find a trade partner, they may have to absorb Bates-Diop’s $2.6 million salary for this season and release him from the roster.

Bates-Diop, who has been a serviceable role player in his time with the team, could be a casualty of roster constraints, as Minnesota looks to balance its lineup with a mix of veterans and younger players.

His absence from practice might indicate that a decision has already been made, though no official announcement has been made yet.

As the Timberwolves near the start of the season, they will need to finalize their roster soon, and Bates-Diop’s future with the team appears increasingly uncertain.
