The Washington Wizards made efforts to trade Johnny Davis and Patrick Baldwin Jr. to clear roster space but were ultimately unsuccessful.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Wizards tried to move either player in recent days to retain guard Jared Butler, but no deal materialized. Washington was reportedly unwilling to attach draft capital to facilitate a trade, leading to the decision to waive Butler.
Davis, entering the third year of his four-year, $21.9 million contract, averaged 3 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game last season. His performance, while showing flashes of potential, did not significantly impact the team’s overall success.
Similarly, Baldwin averaged 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 13 minutes per game for the Wizards during the last season. Baldwin, also in the third year of a four-year deal worth $13.9 million, is facing a pivotal moment in his career as he looks to establish himself in the league.
Both players were seen as potential trade pieces due to their current contracts and underwhelming performances in Washington. However, without the inclusion of draft assets, the Wizards were unable to find a trade partner.
With Butler’s release, Washington had no choice but to move forward with their current roster configuration. The team is expected to continue seeking ways to improve its depth, particularly as it looks to rebuild following a disappointing 2023-24 season.
