Brooklyn Nets forward Cameron Johnson has addressed the recent trade rumors surrounding him, emphasizing that his focus remains on the current season. Despite speculation that the Nets might consider moving him, Johnson expressed confidence in his role with the team and the organization’s trust in him.
“I’ve been able to feel comfortable in what’s going on,” Johnson told the New York Post. “Even with the uncertainty, it’s not like an uncertainty where I don’t think that our staff here, our front office here, has a lack of trust in me. So I feel confident in this group. I feel confident going forward.”
Johnson, who signed a four-year, $94.5 million deal with the Nets in the summer of 2023, has become a key part of the team’s core. The 6-foot-8 sharpshooter isn’t letting the possibility of a trade affect his mindset. He is committed to giving his best effort for the Nets, regardless of what happens down the line.
“I’m going to compete for this team,” Johnson continued. “And it’s not even on my mind, really. There’s tons and tons and tons of basketball to be played here.”
He reflected on his physical and mental preparation compared to the previous season, noting that he feels much more comfortable heading into the new campaign.
“So much better, so much better,” Johnson said when asked to compare how he feels now versus last year. “Especially at this point in the season when what we’re trying to do is build our base and build our endurance up and get those game reps.”
Johnson, 28, had a productive 2023-24 season, averaging 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in 27.6 minutes per game. His ability to stretch the floor with his shooting and his versatility on defense make him a valuable asset to the Nets. He’s optimistic about his role this season and has already logged significant minutes during the preseason.
“To get out there and get through this preseason, obviously a couple of high-minutes games, and to kind of build that momentum is really important, especially shooting the ball,” Johnson added. “So I’m really glad that I’ve been able to play a lot this preseason.”
Despite the rumors, Johnson remains focused on the task at hand—helping the Nets succeed this season. He knows there’s plenty of basketball left to be played and that his role will be crucial to the team’s success, whether or not a trade happens.
For now, the trade speculation isn’t a concern for Johnson. His priority is staying in the moment, improving his game, and contributing to the Nets’ performance on the court.
