Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid recently made headlines by stating he may never participate in back-to-back games for the rest of his career. The reigning NBA MVP is focused on managing the physical toll his body has endured throughout his time in the league.
Embiid acknowledged the demanding nature of the NBA schedule, saying, “If I had to guess, I would probably never play back-to-backs the rest of my career.”
NBA legend Kevin Garnett responded strongly to Embiid’s remarks during an appearance on Ticket & The Truth. Garnett stated, “82 games, man, this is what the fu***** job calls for. You’re not practicing. You don’t play in the summer.” He emphasized that players should be prepared for the full NBA schedule and not shy away from back-to-back games.
Garnett’s criticism underscores the importance of endurance in a professional athlete’s career. He further explained, “I could understand you’re playing in the summer, you on the playground, you at the Olympics, then it’s training camp, y’all do 30 days of tour days, okay that’s when you get rest. I don’t want to hear this s***, man.”
Embiid’s statement comes in light of his injury history, which has been a concern since he entered the league. Over the past eight seasons, Embiid has participated in only 433 of a possible 637 games due to various injuries, including foot problems that sidelined him for his first two seasons.
The 76ers’ front office is on board with Embiid’s approach to managing his workload. General Manager Daryl Morey emphasized the need for caution, particularly with Embiid and backup center Paul Reed. Morey stated the team is committed to being “smart about it” in managing Embiid’s playing time.
Despite concerns regarding his availability for back-to-back games, Embiid remains one of the most dominant players in the NBA. In the 2023-24 season, he averaged an impressive 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 assists over 39 games. His exceptional scoring, defensive skills, and playmaking ability make him crucial to the Sixers’ championship aspirations.
As the league continues to navigate the balance between player health and performance, Garnett’s comments highlight the ongoing debate surrounding load management. Players like Embiid face increasing scrutiny over their decisions, especially when they choose to prioritize health over participation in games.
