Newcastle Eagles end 2015 with emphatic win

It has certainly been the year of the Newcastle Eagles and rather fittingly, the all-conquering Tyneside club wrapped up the last action of 2015 in the BBL by making a real statement ahead of 2016 with an eye-catching 104-72 triumph at Glasgow Rocks.

It was a victory that stretched their winning streak to 25 games and continued their long-standing hold over their rivals, who had actually looked well set when they found themselves 33-30 in the lead midway through the second quarter.

With British forward Will Hall on fire and with 18 points to his name before the interval arrived, as well as some nice outside scores by Scottish guard Jonny Bunyan, the Rocks sensed they might be able to finally post a defeat on the unbeaten leaders.

However, the Eagles manoeuvred their way into the box-seat leading up to the break and after heading to the locker-rooms with a modest 48-42 advantage, they exploded and blew the Rocks away with a rampant third-quarter salvo.

Consecutive scores from three-point range by Andy Thomson and Scott Martin instigated the scorching start to the second half from the visitors and it was to snap the contest open and put the north-east side on the road to victory.

The Eagles poured in 31 points during the third quarter and the Rocks had no answer when they fell 79-56 behind, as the away team soared further during the last ten minutes.

Thomson finished with 23 points from a brilliant 80% floor shooting, helped by a perfect five of five from downtown, while Chapman added 24 points – a tally matched by Hall, who was the standout performer for the hosts.
