Jalen Duren has proven himself as an effective rim-runner and shot-blocker during his first two seasons with the Pistons. However, according to Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press, the organization is now eager to unlock additional dimensions of Duren’s game – specifically his playmaking abilities.
In training camp, Duren has emerged as a playmaking anchor, demonstrating skills that could prove invaluable given the team’s current roster, which includes only three true playmakers. This situation could mean that Duren will be relied upon sooner rather than later to take on more responsibilities.
“I think we’re going to let him play with the ball some,” head coach J.B. Bickerstaff explained. “Whether he defensively rebounds the ball and has the ability to bring it up the floor some, whether he catches it on the elbow and we play split action and he can make those reads. So I think just trying to diversify where he touches it, and then we’ll keep building from there.”
This strategy not only aims to enhance Duren’s individual skill set but also seeks to create a more dynamic offense for the Pistons. By encouraging Duren to engage in ball-handling and playmaking, the coaching staff hopes to leverage his athleticism and basketball IQ to create more scoring opportunities for both himself and his teammates. As Duren develops these skills, he could become a pivotal figure in the Pistons’ offensive schemes moving forward.
