Kevin Durant recently addressed the possibility of signing a one-year, $59.7 million extension with the Phoenix Suns for the 2026-27 season.
Durant became eligible to sign the extension on July 12 and has until October 21 to make a decision. However, the 36-year-old superstar remains focused on his current contract and performance.
“I got two years left on my contract,” Durant said, shortly after his 36th birthday. “I’m focused on being the best I can every day in the moment. We’ll figure out that stuff when it’s time.”
The Suns acquired Durant in a blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets before the 2023 trade deadline, and the team has been vocal about their desire to keep him long-term. Suns team owner Mat Ishbia expressed his enthusiasm for Durant’s presence in Phoenix.
“Everyone talks about Kevin, Kevin loves it here,” Ishbia said. “We love Kevin Durant. We talk to him and his agent, Rich Kleiman, all the time. We don’t really go through contract extensions publicly, but I’ll tell you this: Kevin loves it. We love Kevin. We plan on Kevin being here. Nothing is changing with that.”
James Jones, the Suns’ president of basketball operations, echoed Ishbia’s sentiments, emphasizing the mutual admiration between the team and Durant.
“We love having KD here,” Jones said. “We want him here. We’ll figure that out. Like Mat said, we don’t really talk about that publicly, but the thing we do talk about publicly is who really wants to be here and who is a great fit for us. So we love KD, he loves being here. That goes without saying.”
While no immediate decision is expected, Durant’s strong relationship with the Suns and his commitment to the team suggest that he could continue his career in Phoenix beyond his current deal.
Both Durant and the Suns appear to be taking a patient approach, focusing on the present while leaving the door open for future discussions regarding the extension.
