The Charlotte Hornets have signed free agent center Harry Giles to a one-year deal. Giles, a Duke alum and North Carolina native, returns home to compete for a roster spot.

The deal offers Giles a chance to reestablish himself after a challenging stretch in his NBA career.

Giles was originally drafted 20th overall in 2017 by the Portland Trail Blazers before being traded to the Sacramento Kings.

After sitting out his rookie season due to injury, Giles made his NBA debut in 2018. His time with the Kings showed promise, but injuries and inconsistent play limited his production.

Giles’ best season came in 2018-19, when he averaged 7 points and 3.8 rebounds in 58 games. Despite flashes of potential, the Kings declined his option for the 2020-21 season.

Giles then spent time with the Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Clippers, though he struggled to find a consistent role.

Last season, Giles played 23 games between the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 2.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.

His career has been marked by injuries, including a season-ending setback with the Agua Caliente Clippers in 2022.

Despite the challenges, Giles continues to pursue his NBA dream and hopes to make an impact with the Hornets.

The one-year deal gives him an opportunity to compete for a spot on Charlotte’s roster during training camp.
