The EuroLeague Basketball has announced significant rule changes for the upcoming 2024-25 season. These updates aim to enhance fairness and clarity in both the EuroLeague and EuroCup.
One major change involves backcourt violations, which will now be part of the Instant Replay System (IRS). Referees can review backcourt violation calls during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and overtime. Additionally, coaches can challenge backcourt violation calls at any time during the game.
Another update aligns the EuroLeague rules with FIBA regulations regarding jump ball violations. From now on, if a jump ball violation occurs, it will not automatically result in a throw-in. Instead, the player inbounding the ball will do so while straddling the center line, with 24 seconds on the shot clock.
If the violation happens in the opposing team’s frontcourt, the ball will be inbounded in the backcourt with the same 24 seconds on the shot clock. Conversely, if the violation occurs in the backcourt, the ball will be inbounded in the frontcourt with only 14 seconds on the shot clock.
In terms of block/charge calls, a new standard will apply to the defensive semicircle (DSC). A defensive player will now be considered outside the DSC if any part of their foot is elevated above the line. Previously, that player would have been regarded as inside the semicircle in such cases.
