Ja Morant is setting high expectations for the Memphis Grizzlies’ newest addition, Zach Edey.
The star point guard believes Edey, the 7-foot-4 center drafted by the Grizzlies in 2024, has the potential to win Rookie of the Year.
“Definitely rookie of the year,” Morant confidently stated, according to Damichael Cole of Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Morant didn’t stop there, adding, “I think easily, too,” showing his firm belief in the young center’s abilities.
Edey, who played for Purdue University, is no stranger to success, having earned numerous accolades in college, including being named Naismith College Player of the Year twice.
The 7-foot-4 center impressed Morant during their summer workouts, known as Morant’s “boot camp,” where Edey reportedly held his own.
Morant, known for his rigorous offseason training, was pleased to see Edey’s performance during these sessions.
Edey’s size and skill make him a unique prospect, and his ability to adapt quickly in the NBA could help the Grizzlies this season.
The Grizzlies selected Edey with the ninth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, banking on his size, skill, and dominance in the paint.
At Purdue, Edey put up impressive numbers, averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2 assists in his final season.
Edey’s collegiate success includes breaking multiple records at Purdue, including most career points and rebounds.
His dominance in college made him one of the most highly touted prospects going into the NBA Draft.
Despite his accolades, there were questions about how Edey’s game would translate to the NBA level, especially given his towering height and playstyle.
However, Morant’s confidence in Edey suggests the Grizzlies see him as a key piece for their future.
