According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the Golden State Warriors are not currently prepared to offer Jonathan Kuminga a maximum contract extension valued at $224 million over five years, or any deal nearing that amount.
Despite Kuminga’s potential to elevate his value, his relatively short track record and potential fit issues with the team lead the Warriors to prefer allowing his restricted free agency to unfold if they cannot finalize an extension.
Steve Kerr seems to question Kuminga’s suitability as a small forward, citing concerns about spacing and passing, and there is a logjam in the frontcourt with Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Trayce Jackson-Davis. Kuminga might be better utilized as a small-ball power forward, where he could potentially excel.
The discussions between Kuminga and the Warriors about a contract extension have been tentative, revealing a significant gap in how each side values his worth.
Additionally, if an extension were to be finalized, it could complicate the Warriors’ ability to trade Wiggins later in the season due to poison pill provisions associated with such deals.
